2013 The Year in Review

It’s been a busy year for us! From the release of our self-titled album on Third Man Records, to performances on David Letterman and A Prairie Home Companion, to tons of touring in the US and abroad, it seems like we’ve done a little bit of everything this year. Most of all we enjoyed coming out to your neck of the woods and all the people we met along the way. To wrap up the year, we’d like to do a quick review for you of our favorite moments from 2013.

New Album Release + Blue Room & Casa Loma Shows

We celebrated the June 2013 release of our self-titled album on Third Man Records with two amazing shows at Third Man’s Blue Room in Nashville and the Casa Loma Ballroom in our hometown St. Louis.

Both shows were completely sold out; the historic Casa Loma Ballroom was overflowing with over 1,000 people, many of them friends and family. It was great being surrounded by our Third Man family at the Blue Room, and we had so much fun being recorded directly to acetate disc during the set!

Live Performances on David Letterman, A Prairie Home Companion and More!

T.V. was good to us in 2013. ‘La La Blues’ was featured in the opening credits of Pawn Shop Chronicles, and we had a cameo in Disney’s The Lone Ranger, for which we recorded ‘Red’s Theater of the Absurd’ (written by Jack White) for the original score.

In July we made our national television debut in the USA with an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, and shortly thereafter appeared on The Late Late Show on Ireland’s national RTE 1 network.

We had some truly wonderful radio experiences this year as well. In October we had the honor of performing on A Prairie Home Companion with the legendary Garrison Keillor. We were also featured on NPR’s World Cafe with David Dye!

2013 Collaborations and Compilations

It’s always an immense pleasure to work with other artists who are doing great things, and this year there was certainly no shortage of awesome compilation work! In addition to being recorded for the Lone Ranger original score, my version of ‘Lovesick Blues’ performed with Vince Giordano was featured on the Boardwalk Empire Vol 2. Soundtrack.

My version of the civil-war era song ‘Kingdom Come’ was featured on the ATO Records compilation Divided & United! alongside tracks by Loretta Lynn, Ralph Stanley, T Bone Burnett, and many more legendary folks. We also contributed an arrangement to the Eddy Arnold tribute on Plowboy Records (‘Lovebug Itch’ featuring Chris Scruggs, Cheetah Chrome, and Pete Mroz).

Finally, we had the distinct pleasure of releasing the song ‘Good Old Oklahoma’ with our friend JD McPherson under Rounder Records, with all proceeds going to benefit Oklahoma tornado victims.

Over 250 Performances in 2013

We’re lucky that we love what we do because this year we played over 250 shows around the world. In Europe we traveled to the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and for the first time, Spain. Here in the USA we had memorable performances at Jazz FestMerleFestBowery Ballroom and many other fine places around the country. To top it all off we managed to fit in some great shows with our friends The Carolina Chocolate Drops!

Thanks for tuning in folks! Next year we’ve got big plans in the works, including a March tour through Australia and New Zealand. We hope 2014 is even better than the last. Happy Holidays to all of our wonderful supporters; we want to sincerely thank you for making what we do for a living so much fun. As always be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest news…

See you in 2014!
